Design Thinking in the Middle
Participants at the 2013 conference of the European League of Middle Level Education (ELMLE), in Rome, Italy, worked on three successively risky and realistic design challenges illustrating the design thinking process of empathy, user focus, brainstorming, prototyping and feedback.
In the morning participants engaged in a low-risk challenge, taking on the Marshmallow Challenge. They then practiced empathy and design with a partner as they redesigned the gift giving experience. In the afternoon we were joined by eight students from the American Overseas School of Rome. Educator participants empathetically interviewed the middle-schoolers who then became co-designers of a challenge put students at the center of the way their school teaches.
